PocketGIS: Handheld Mapping Software
PocketGIS software is an innovative, affordable and user friendly GIS product, which takes the office based GIS information into the field.

Written for Windows CE, users have the choice of a variety of handhelds including the Recon, Ranger, Magellan Mobile Mapper CE, Husky FEX21, M3, HP iPAQ etc.

Incorporating a powerful set of GIS functions, PocketGIS interfaces to all main corporate GIS systems to update and create maps.

PocketGIS has been designed to support the development of customised applications. The software can be tailored to your needs with forms written which are specific to your data collection requirements. GIS background mapping and attribute information can be accessed and points, lines and polygons can be created and existing features 'red lined'.

Real Time GPS Options
The enhanced GPS interface of PocketGIS accepts RTK as well as RTCM inputs and is therefore fully interfaceable with a range of GPS modules from various manufacturers.

For sub-metre and now decimetre accuracy, in real-time, the OmniSTAR differential GPS system from Fugro, a leading worldwide supplier of sophisticated navigation systems, can be selected. OmniSTAR assures a high degree of accuracy and integrity even when used globally. Beacon Receivers and NTRIP offer further real-time differential accuracies.

Whatever your accuracy needs, Positioning Resources have a range of GPS solutions to match your requirements.

When GPS Alone is not Enough....
Where distances from features need to be measured for accurate positioning, a Laser Rangefinder can be directly connected to PocketGIS to provide users with a comprehensive set of functions including traverse and side-shot modes. Laser instruments from all the main manufacturers can be specified, including Laser Technology, Measurement Devices and Leica.

Eye-safe Lasers provide the ideal solution to remote feature location, with their positions being determined by offsets from existing mapped features. They are ideal for offsetting from GPS features. Total Stations can also be linked to combine precision surveying

Data Integration
The software is provided in two parts, PocketGIS to run on your Win CE Handheld and PocketGIS Connection to run on your PC. The latter provides a map data exchange utility, linking the PocketGIS software to your corporate GIS system. A variety of data formats and databases are supported including, MapInfo, ArcView, AutoCAD, DXF, NTF, Raster (TIFF & BMP) and Access. In addition, PocketGIS can also link with many custom database packages.

Customisation
PocketGIS allows the user to build custom forms to capture attribute data. These can include 'pick lists', tables, category look-ups, and date and time stamps, all of which simplify data collection. The attribute data is uploaded back to the corporate GIS through PocketGIS Connection, providing a means to QC the layer.

Data Storage
The highly efficient storage method employed by PocketGIS means that many times more information can be stored on the device compared with a similarly sized GIS database. The addition of industry standard compact flash memory cards can increase the storage capacity of any handheld device.
