POCKETGIS FEATURES
Customer feedback
has always played an integral part in the development of our PocketGIS
software. Indeed, many of the existing and proposed interfaces and features
have been brought about as a direct result of continuing endeavours to
meet the requirements of our customers.
Parallel Offset Feature
A prime example would be the development of the 'Parallel Offset' feature
which was introduced after a local authority came to us with the question
"How can we capture double yellow lines whilst walking the streets?"
By running PocketGIS on a waterproof Husky
FEX21 hand held computer, the customer was able to take all his GIS
files into the field. He was able to capture double yellow lines by using
the parallel offset feature along with a custom built form, and simply
by tapping on the pen-activated screen he entered the lines as necessary.
What's more, the existing GIS data form automatically popped up ready
for all his data collection needs and once back at the office the software
synchronised with his corporate GIS.

Find by Attribute Feature
The useful new 'Find by Attribute' feature was introduced with a number
of possible customer applications in mind. A national park was most welcoming
of this feature when they had the particular problem of not being able
to re-locate the position of a rare species of orchid.
Upon finding the orchids initially, they were able to plot them easily
and put them onto their map by using PocketGIS in collaboration with a
high accuracy (<1m) OmniSTAR DGPS
system.
However, six months later in the depths of winter, how were they to find
the orchids? Simple - they just used the 'Find by Attribute' function.
PocketGIS searches through your map tile and database information for
your data - then using Navigation, PocketGIS guides you to your precious
orchid - counting down the metres until you find it. Of course it doesn't
have to be an orchid, it could be anything from a manhole cover to a lamp
post...you tell us!
Area Mapping
Determining the exact hectarage (or acreage) of multiple areas, establishing
the perimeters of those areas, and undertaking related tasks, can be a
daunting and time consuming exercise.
 |
However, PocketGIS can now make light work of all these assignments with
a facility to capture the precise boundaries of areas - and calculate
the areas by tapping on the map.
Simply map the required perimeter using a GPS, Laser or Total Station,
and PocketGIS does the rest - and all
before you even leave the site. The user can then set up predefined fields
to record information such as the slope, date, comments and any other
attribute data.
